Steering loading arms

Ships which transport bulk or mass goods (grain, building materials) or fluids are usually loaded and unloaded using a loading arm, which moves goods pneumatically or – in the case of fluids – with pumps. The loading arms of these systems have to be positioned during loading and unloading in such a way as to guarantee continuous transport of the material. Driving and steering tasks include monitoring the position of the loading arm.

Specification

The individual pivots of the loading arms have to be monitored by switches or sensors which can withstand rough conditions and which are, for example, saltwater-resistant and mechanically robust. Since the switches are often mounted in exposed locations, the use of wireless switches can considerably simplify the installation, while ruling out the danger of cable damage. When the bulk goods or fluids are explosive, explosion protection regulations also apply.

Realisation

In order to monitor the position of such loading arms, system manufacturers often opt for two position switches which each monitor the end position of a rotating or linear movement. Here various product series from the “Extreme” range are available – optionally in cabled or wireless versions, both also in variants for explosive environments.

Customer benefit

This application once again focuses on reliable position monitoring in rough conditions (saltwater, dust and dirt, system components which are difficult to access). In addition, the use of wireless position switches eliminates the necessity of slip rings for power and signal transmission.
